30th Anniversary of the PC
Friday 12th August 2011 computing giants such as, IBM and Microsoft, celebrated the 30th anniversary of the personal computer.
August 12th 1981 was the birth of the IBM 5150, although there were PC's made before hand, the 5150 brought the Microsoft Disk Operating System (MS-DOS) to the market which shaped the future of PCs. This revolution made the giants realise the dream of a 'PC on every desk and in every home'.
IBM's Mark Dean was one of the proud dozen engineers that designed the first machine, recently Dean states, "When I helped design the PC, I didn't think I'd live long enough to witness its decline. But, while PCs will continue to be much-used devises, they're no longer at the leading edge of computing."
Although IBM sold off their PC division in 2005, Microsoft, however, is still heavily invested in the PC. Shaw, Microsoft's vice president for corporate communications has realised the evolution of technology has left them in the 'Post PC' era, but prefers the term 'PC plus'. Although technology is moving beyond the PC, it doesn't necessarily indicate its demise, as Microsoft predicts 400 million PC's will be sold worldwide next year.
Microsoft's: PCs, Phone Platform and the Xbox are classed as the continued evolution of the PC. Although Microsoft build their own hardware such as the Xbox and Kinect, in most cases they use hardware partners on PCs, phones and other devises which optimises the combination of hardware and software expertise gathered throughout the dominant PC era.
