The rise of the Tablets
Will Apple's iPad remain the dominant tablet?
Almost three-quarters of the tablets sold in the UK have been taken by Apple's iPad, but will Apple's dominance deteriorate?
According to Kantar Worldpanel Comtech, 3.62 million people own tablet computers in the UK, it is forecasted that the increase in tablet owners will result in Apple' s fall in market share.
The second leading tablet, the Samsung Galaxy holds a small market share (6%) in comparison to Apple, research shows that Galaxy's market share remains with only 6% of potential tablet buyers were willing to purchase their tablet.
During Kantar's research 28% of people intending to buy a tablet were unsure which brand to buy. This percentage may be influenced away from existing Apple customers as Apple customers share loyalty with their products.
As Dominic Sunnebo, global consumer insight director for Kantar, said: "Apple's achievements in this market are clearly linked to its success in the smartphone market: 80% of people who already own an iPhone and plan to purchase a tablet intend to buy an iPad. This is clearly something other manufacturers will have to contend with."
It is suggested that 10% of consumers who already own a personal computer are deciding to choose between a tablet or a smartphone. With Apple's reputation and dominance in both the tablet and smartphone markets, will their market share remain the leading figure in years to come? Or will other dominant smartphone manufacturers, or tablet specialists surpass Apple's dominance? Will the tablet's presence affect the design of laptops/portable computers, or will it eventually replace it?
